XVII (1st WS) CC Olympiad-Preliminary round (section 1)
Start date: 10/1/2006
Time Limit: 10/60
TD: IA Daniel Finkelstein (ARG)
HK Team members: (board order)
1.SM Geoffrey Wise 2481
2.Chris Champion 2415
3.IM James Henri 2335 (Australian CC IM, now is working in HKU)
4.Allan Johnston 2182
5.Christopher Sham 2204
6.Luk Luen-wah 1905
TC: Leung Hin-sing (Henry)
This is the first Web Server event of the ICCF Olympiad, including 52
teams playing in 5 sections. Hong Kong is arranged in Section 1 with 10
other teams: Austria, Brazil, Cuba, Isolated Chess Players, Israel,
Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Poland and Russia.
At present, HK Team has finished 20 games from total 60; gained 9
points, performed really good until now, always keep its position
around 3rd to 5th places. We applaud to all team members for their ex-
cellent performances and every effort.
Current standings: 1.Poland 12.5, 2.Lithuania 11.5, 3-4.Norway/Brazil
9.5, 5.Hong Kong 9.
Below are two games analysed by SIM Geoff Wise:
"Here are two games which I played as White in Olympiad XVII Section1, and which are worth knowing if you want to secure a secure draw against an opponent who has a much higher rating to you and who is prepared, as Black, to go along with 1. e4 e5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, probably expecting 3.Bb5, i.e. the Ruy Lopez. Instead, I played 3.Bc4 which might have encouraged my opponent in Game A below, Luis Almiron of Brazil with an ELO rating of 2608 (127 more than my 2481), to think he had good chances of defeating a fairly modest Giuoco Piano (Italian Game) opening. So, the game proceeded with 3......Bc5, 4.c3 Nf6, 5.d4 ed 6.cd Bb4+ which, once upon a time, White would have answered with 7.Nc3 leading to the Moller Attack (which I used to play with much success when I was a schoolboy in London, way back in the mists of time, but which has since been discredited by comprehensive analysis). However, I played the much safer 7. Bd2 which almost inevitably leads to what some chess books refer to as a "Grandmaster Draw" (apparently 'cos quite a few Grandmasters have used this ploy in tournament play in order to finish their games in a few minutes and get the rest of the day off to play tennis or whatever.....). I reckon that what's good for an OTB GM should also be good enough for a humble CC SIM and, by Move 15, Senor Almiron and I had agreed to share the score (you'll soon see why if you play through Game A below which ends in a repetition of moves).
White: IM Luis Almiron 2608 (BRA)
Black: SM Geoff Wise 2481 (HKG)
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.c3 Nf6 5.d4 exd4 6.cxd4 Bb4+ 7.Bd2 Bxd2
8.Nbxd2 d5 9.exd5 Nxd5 10.Qb3 Na5 11.Qa4+ Nc6 12.Qb3 Na5 13.Qa4+ Nc6
14.Qb3 Na5 15.Qa4+ Nc6 16.Qb3 Na5 1/2-1/2
¡@
But, does Black have to follow all of these Game A moves or does he have any other way to try breaking down White's resistance? Game B below is one that I played against Dov Rozenberg of Israel with an ELO rating of 2579 in this same Olympiad XVII. His rating is "only" 98 more than mine, so I should be ashamed to admit that I broke my own unwritten rule to only play for a certain draw against opponents whose ratings are at least 100 higher than me, but then I thought "What the heck......98 more is ALMOST 100 more so let's go for it......"). Dov's 10th move in Game B, i.e. 10......Nce7, is regarded as just about the only worthwhile alternative to Almiron's 10.....Na5 in Game A. but in my opinion the end result is just as inevitable given accurate play on each side. Play through Game B if you think you could force a result other than the draw by repetition of moves which we finally agreed on by Move 35.
White: SM Dov Rozenberg 2579 (ISR)
Black: SM Geoff Wise 2481 (HKG)
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.c3 Bf6 5.d4 exd4 6.cxd4 Bb4+ 7.Bd2 Bxd2+
8.Nbxd2 d5 9.exd5 Nxd5 10.Qb3 Bg4 11.0-0 0-0 12.Rfe1 c6 13.Ne4 Qb6
14.Nc3 Qxb3 15.Bxb3 Bg4 16.Nxd5 Nxd5 17.Bxd5 cxd5 18.Re7 f6
19.Rxb7 Rfb8 20.Rxb8 Rxb8 21.b3 Bxf3 22.gxf3 Rc8 23.Re1 Kf7 24.Re2 Rc1+
25.Kg2 Rc3 26.f4 g6 27.Re3 Rc2 28.a4 h5 29.f5 gxf5 30.Rh3 Kg6
31.Rg3+ Kf7 32.Rh3 Kg6 33.Rg3+ Kf7 34.Rh3 Kg6 35.Rg3+ 1/2-1/2
¡@
Remember, the above variations are pretty well guaranteed to gain half a point for White, BUT it's very unlikely that you'll ever get a full point with 7.Bd2 against a good CC player."
